The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a conference in Hanoi on March 9 to devise orientations for restructuring the forestry sector in the future.

As of the end of 2010, total forest area in the country was around 13.4 million hectares, with the rate of forest coverage reaching 39.5 percent, according to a report from the General Department of Forestry under the MARD.

The country’s total forest wood reserves reached 953 million cubic metres, up 124 million cubic metres compared to 2005. Especially, the sector saw high export turnover growth of 21.4 percent on average over the past five years.

Participants agreed that after 13 years of implementing the project to plant 5 million hectares of forest area, forest reserves have increased. People’s living conditions have also been improved, while policies for the forestry sector have been revamped. However, the sector still faces challenges such as deforestation, forest fires and the quality of forest resources, and low competitiveness.

In future, the forestry sector will focus on measures to increase the output, quality and value of forestry products and implement strategic goals, as well as devising a plan to protect and develop forest in 2011-2020, with priority given to increasing incomes for forest growers.
