Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged relevant ministries, agencies and localities to take preventative measures to minimise material and property losses caused by flooding in the central region.

The PM asked the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control, and the National Committee for Search and Rescue and localities to mobilise all forces and resources available to evacuate people from danger areas to higher ground. He also asked for prompt measures to assist people in flooded areas to alleviate hunger and avoid epidemics.

A working mission from the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control arrived in the flooded areas on November 12 to inspect flood prevention efforts.

Over the past few days, heavy downpours have caused floodwaters in the major rivers from Thua Thien-Hue to Binh Dinh province to rise above the third alert level by between 0.5-1.7m. Many areas in the provinces have been deep in water for days. Rising floodwaters have also stopped 10 trans-national trains with more than 4,000 passengers on board travelling from Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam provinces and Da Nang city.

According to the latest statistics, 19 people have been killed or missing in the floods over the past three days. The disaster has also submerged 46,500 homes and damaged a number of road sections and many public works.

Hundreds of soldiers from Military Zones 4 and 5 have been mobilised to support rescue and evacuation work in flood-prone areas. Borderguard forces in Quang Nam, Da Nang, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai have sent 858 soldiers and 25 ships to evacuate 1,000 households with a total of nearly 4,320 people in Cam Kim commune to safe areas in Hoi An town.

The Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control in the central region reported on November 13 that floodwaters have begun to recede slowly, but warned evacuated people not to return to their homes yet.
