The Sports & Culture newspaper and the Vietnam Journalists’ Association launched the first Vietnam press caricature competition in Hanoi on December 11. The activity was held to mark the 85th anniversary of Vietnam Press Caricature.

Caricature is either a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, or in literature, a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.

This type of press often generates a strong insight and leaves a deep impression on people.

For many reasons, there has never been an exhibition of caricatures in Vietnam for the past 20 years. The organising board said that the launch of this competition will provide a chance for artists to invent caricatures, helping to bring enjoyment to the Vietnames public.

Nguyen Ai Quoc, artists To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Gia Tri, Mai Van Hien, and Phan Ke An and the later generation of artists Nguyen Hai Chi, Huynh Ba Thanh, Ta Luu and Van Thanh are considered founders of the Vietnam press caricature.
