Vietnam has been very successful in implementing poverty reduction target, one of eight millennium development goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations, said Yoshi Yatsu, Japanese member of parliament and former chairman of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD).
“It is amazing and none of other countries have been so successful,” Mr Yoshi told local media worker on the sidelines of the Asian Parliamentarians' seminar on poverty alleviation held in Hanoi on April 5.
The poverty rate among the population in Vietnam was reduced from 58 percent to 24 percent over the last decade. Vietnam is developing in every aspect, Mr Yoshi said, adding that within five years, Vietnam will achieve the MDGs.
The seminar was jointly organised by the Vietnam Association of Population and Development (VAPPD), AFPPD and the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It drew about 30 MPs from Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
