Vietnam scoops 18 medals at SIMOC

(VOV) - Vietnamese pupils won four gold, three silver, 11 bronze medals and 18 certificates of merit at the Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) 2015.

This year’s event drew 405 pupils from second grade to tenth grade, from 13 countries and territories, including Bulgaria, Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong (China), Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, China, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

Teacher Tran Nam Dung, head of the Vietnamese delegation, said the exam questions are too difficult but interesting. Contestants had to answer 25 questions in 90 minutes. Only one fourth grade student, from the Philippines, obtained a perfect score.

Le Trung Nghia, 6th grade, gained 75 out of 85 marks – the highest score of the Vietnamese team.

SIMOC 2015 followed the Singapore and Asian Schools Mathematics Olympiad (SASMO 2015), which took place in April.

SASMO was held in each participating country, and winners compete at SIMOC.

These scholastic competitions assist to promote mathematics in primary and secondary schools through math contests, academic games and cultural exchanges and help students better excel.
