General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed El Baradei and his entourage paid a visit to Vietnam from Deccember 9-11 with the aim of strengthening cooperation ties between Vietnam and the IAEA.

During his visit, the General Director met leaders from the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Vietnam Nuclear Energy Agency.

The Vietnamese agencies spoke highly of the IAEA and ElBaradei's personal cooperation and support in applying nuclear technology and energy in a wide range of areas in Vietnam.
They also welcomed the IAEA's plan to help Vietnam do research and develop atomic power and to promote a programme that uses nuclear technology to prevent and treat cancer.


From his side, General Director ElBaradei highly appreciated the cooperation between Vietnam and IAEA during the past few years.


He said he welcomes the Vietnamese government’s decision to sign the IAEA's Additional Protocol of the Safeguards Agreements and said he will support Vietnam in this issue and its
ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty.
