Specialities of the South West

The Southwestern region of Vietnam is famous for many kinds of special dishes.

Dried mice: The dish is quite famous in Tam Nong District, Dong Thap Province. People here often hunt for mice in their fields almost throughout the year, but the mice are best after harvest. After being baked, the mice are eaten with pepper and salt.
Dried snake: At the flooding season, snakes appear in fields of An Giang Province, so local people often hunt them. Snake flesh is dried, while their skin and bones are used to make other the kinds of dish.
Bat: According to people in the Southwest, the smellier the bat, the better the dish. Skill is needed to make bat flesh taste good, and surprisingly bat flesh doesn’t need to be washed by water. Bats often eat fruits, so it flesh is good. Local people make bats into different dishes such as mixed with coconut and cabbage. But the most famous dishes are bat soup and stir-fried bat.
Bay Nui scorpion: This is a special dish in Bay Nui area in An Giang Province. The dish is served hot with cucumber, spicy vegetables, pepper and salt.
Larvae coconut worm: This dish challenges many people when the worms are eaten raw with chilli and fish sauce. The worms are said to taste similar to eggs. Larvae coconut worm raising is currently banned due to their negative impacts on the environment.
