Vietnam represented at 17th Western Pacific Naval Symposium

VOV.VN - Rear Admiral Tran Thanh Nghiem, commander of the Vietnam People’s Navy, attended the 17th Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS 17)on October 26 through an online platform, with the event running with the theme of “Effective Ocean Governance for Regional Partnership and Stability.

As part of his opening remarks, Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippine Navy Adeluis S Bordado emphasised that the WPNS aims to intensify co-operation activities and address tensions impacting relations between nations. This is in addition to the challenges related to terrorism, smuggling, illegal fishing, and maritime security activities.

With the combined efforts of numerous member countries and observers, the contents of co-operation within the WPNS framework have become more diverse, with the scope and field of co-operation constantly expanding. Indeed, strategic trust has been strengthened based on the principle of effective dialogue and collaboration among various countries throughout the Western Pacific region.

The symposium largely focuses on three main issues, including considering the application to join the WPNS of the Fiji Navy, with all 20 approval votes, discussing commitments to host activities within the WPNS framework in the near future, and considering the criteria for the navies of the observer countries to become full members of the WPNS.
According to the schedule, the plenary session is set to take place on October 27.
