Repatriated local student gets positive COVID-19 result after leaving quarantine

VOV.VN - A 22-year-old Vietnamese student who recently returned from the United States and was in quarantine in Chuong My district of Hanoi has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) after being permitted to return home.

This comes after the man, who is a resident of Ha Long in Quang Ninh province, landed at Noi Bai International Airport on a repatriation flight home from the US on December 20 before being immediately sent to a military facility in Chuong My district of Hanoi.

The Quang Ninh Center for Disease Control (CDC) stated that during his 14-day quarantine period, the man tested negative for the virus once.

Following the competition of his mandatory isolation period on January 4, his samples were then taken for a second test, although at this point he had been permitted to leave the facility, despite his results having yet to be returned.

According to the provincial CDC, a total of 18 F1 and F2 cases relating to the COVID-19 case have subsequently been detected.

Furthermore, five of his family members who came to pick him up by car to return to Ha Long were swiftly placed into quarantine where they had their samples taken as part of COVID-19 testing. Fortunately, all five individuals returned negative results.

Most recently, on December 22, Patient 1,435 returning home from Britain and quarantined in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh upon arrival was confirmed to be infected with the new virus strain.

Following the detection of the case, Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long has proposed to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc that inbound flights should be suspended or limited from countries and territories where new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus are found.

Amidst the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in the world with over 85 million confirmed cases and 1.84 million deaths in 215 countries and territories, Vietnam has applied drastic responding measures with the spirit of “fighting the pandemic is like fighting an enemy”.

The Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has called on people in cities and provinces nationwide to strictly follow a “5K message” (in Vietnamese) - Khau trang (facemask), Khu khuan (disinfection), Khoang cach (distance), Khong tu tap (no gathering), Khai bao y te (health declaration) - to help citizens get used to living safely with the COVID-19 pandemic in the “new normal”.
