COVID-19: 159 new cases recorded in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Vietnam has recorded an additional 159 coronavirus cases, including 158 locally acquired infections, in eight localities nationwide during the past 12 hours, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in its 06.00am COVID-19 update.

Most of the new cases were documented in quarantine and lockdown areas, thus posing no risk of the community, the MoH said.

Bac Giang province, which is the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, took the lead with 87 locally transmitted cases. It was followed by Ho Chi Minh City (45), Tien Giang (11), Binh Duong (7), Bac Ninh (6), Lang Son (1), and Ha Tinh (1).

A Vietnamese national also tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on June 16 after returning from Japan on June 2.

The outbreak in HCM City, the country’s busiest and most populous city, remains complicated.

Among the newly detected cases, 14 cases were closely related to the outbreak at the Revival Ekklesia Mission Vietnam, a Christian congregation in Go Vap district. The source of infection of two cases is unknown.

The number of infections in the city has exceeded the 1,000 mark, ranking third after Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces.

The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic which started in late April has attacked 40 cities and provinces across the country, with 8,262 cases confirmed.

Overall, Vietnam has logged a total of 11,794 cases, both locally transmitted and imported infections, since the SARS – CoV - 2 virus emerged in January 2020.

Sixty-one COVID-19 deaths have been reported, including 26 cases during the latest outbreak.
