Police have fired tear gas to disperse the most recent opposition rally in the centre of the Iranian capital of Tehran, hours after the Revolutionary Guards warned protesters that they would smash any fresh resistance.

Riot police and members of the religious Basij militia were deployed to handle hundreds of supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, who had gathered earlier in Tehran's Haft-e Tir square.

"In this current sensitive situation ... the Guards will strongly come down on rioters in a revolutionary way and those who break the law," said the website of the force loyal to the ruling establishment.

Previously, defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi has urged his supporters to continue demonstrating against the disputed election results, but ‘with restraint’.
