111 killed in traffic accidents in Vietnam during four-day break

A total of 152 traffic accidents were recorded across Vietnam during the four day public holiday that started on May 30, resulting in 111 deaths and 138 injuries.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, an average of 38 traffic accidents happened every day during the holiday that commemorated Reunification Day (April 30) and Labor Day (May 1).

Compared to the same period last year, the number of accidents was down by 25.8%, or 53 cases, and the number of deceased and injured victims was also slightly reduced by five and 11, respectively.

Most of the collisions occurred on the streets of Vietnam, the committee said, adding that three of them were rail accidents that killed three people and injured another.

Among the road accidents, three crashes were considered particularly serious as they were responsible for the deaths of 10 people.

On May 3, a truck carrying bricks experienced break failure when descending a slope in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, resulting in three people being killed and seven other injured.

Another fatal collision between a passenger bus and two trucks occurred on the morning of the same day in the south-central province of Quang Ngai, killing four and wounded eight.

According to Do Tien Dat, director of the Quang Ngai Department of Transport, the passenger bus operator had not registered their operation as per regulations, while another local official pointed out that the crash happened because part of the road has not been upgraded and broadened.

Three people died and five others suffered major injuries after an accident involving a passenger bus and a truck occurred on May 2 in Dak Nong Province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

Initial investigations revealed that the bus was in the wrong lane, causing the serious accident.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, traffic police across the country dealt with about 113, 945 violations of traffic regulations during the four days, seizing 53 automobiles and 1,928 motorcycles and suspending 390 driving licenses.

Statistics from Cho Ray Hospital, the largest general hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, showed that the number of patients submitted to its emergency rooms because of traffic accidents was double that of normal days.

Most of the accidents happened at night and the victims mainly suffered head injuries, broken arms or legs, and wounds to chests and abdomens, according to doctors at the infirmary.
