PM Pham Minh Chinh makes first-ever visit to China

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh left Hanoi on June 25 for China on an official visit where he will also attend the 14th annual meeting of the New Champions known as the Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin from June 25-28.

Chinh’s China visit, the first in his capacity as Vietnamese Prime Minister, takes place at a time when the two countries are celebrating 15 years of their comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership this year.

That Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was invited by Chinese Premier Li Qiang to visit China shows the two Parties and States attach great importance to the Vietnam - China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and they wish to develop this partnership more sustainably and substantively, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu.

Vu told local media that the visit aims to concretize the substantive outcomes of the November 2022 visit to China by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, especially in the context of regional and global economic fallout.

The two sides are expected to seek specific measures to promote economic and trade cooperation, especially between the two countries’ border localities, and to implement large infrastructure projects between the two countries.

This visit will also help to strengthen political trust, seek solutions to pending issues, including those at sea, and enhance local exchanges, said Vu.

China is Vietnam’s largest trading partner while Vietnam is China’s largest partner in ASEAN. Two-way trade turnover between the two countries hit US$175.6 billion last year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

As of March 2023, China had poured US$23.85 billion into 3,651 projects in Vietnam, ranking sixth among foreign investors in the country.

During his stay from June 25-28, PM Chinh will attend the 14th annual meeting of the New Champions known as the Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and World Economic Forum (WEF) president Klaus Schwab.

The forum is set to bring together many Government leaders and more than 1,000 businesses from across the world. Vietnam is one of four key Government leaders invited to this gathering, meaning the WEF as well as the international business community highly appreciate the Vietnamese economy’s position and role, as well as its determination to reform and open up the economy.

Given the current difficulties, the diplomat said PM Chinh is expected to call on regional and global business communities as well as governments to strengthen cooperation, open the market for trade and investment, actively support businesses and unleash resources to reserve the current declining trend.

Through this forum, the Prime Minister will share experiences and learn from lessons of other member economies and leading businesses on how to mobilise resources and take advantage of new growth drivers such as digital transformation, green transformation, energy transformation, and circular economy development, in order to realize fast, sustainable, inclusive growth and innovation models based on science and technology, said Vu.

As Vietnam is a developing, transitional and open economy, the PM is also anticipated to call on the global business community to invest more in the Vietnamese market and its economy. He will introduce delegates to public-private partnership models, cooperation models between the Government and businesses as well as measures to attract green and sustainable financial sources into the Vietnamese economy.

“I totally believe that the contributions and participation of the Prime Minister and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation will certainly bring about important results, contributing to the overall success of the forum,” said the Deputy Foreign Minister.
