Hundreds gather in Laos to remember the fallen

VOV.VN - Hundreds of people gathered on July 27 at the monument to Laos-Vietnam fallen soldiers in the village of Ban Con for the 69th War Invalids and Martyrs Day memorial ceremony.

The observance remembers the brave men and women from both nations who died while fighting for independence. Those in attendance included representatives from the Vietnam Embassy and Lao Government along with countless residents from both countries.

Vietnam Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Manh Hung spoke in tribute at the event saying the memorial is a legacy of both the Vietnam and Laos nations. It is a vivid symbol of the deep ties and the blood of freedom that inextricably links the two nations.

Vietnam and Laos did not come into being without sacrifice, said the Ambassador, and they cannot remain strong and free without continuing sacrifice. If we forget that, then the day may come when we no longer enjoy our freedoms.

The ceremony was marked by solemn prayer, incense offerings and more than 100 wreaths placed around the memorial and surrounding cemetery that has become a relic of history of the French revolution and a spiritual destination, maintained for today’s and tomorrow’s generations.
