Vietnam will increase its total imported salt to 430,000 tonnes this year, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developments (MARD).
According to the MARD, Vietnam needs 1,380,000 tonnes of salt this year for production and consumption. Of the total amount, domestic businesses can manage 1,100,000 tonnes and the remainder will be imported.
However, due to an increasing demand for salt, the ministry has decided to import an additional 200,000 tonnes this year.
In the first five months of this year, businesses imported 150,000-160,000 tonnes of salt, costing them around US$9.92 million.
The Ministry forecast that domestic annual demand for salt is likely to reach 1.5 million tonnes by 2010 and more than 2 million tonnes by 2020.
