High hopes on breakthroughs in economic cooperation with US
VOV.VN - Former Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Pham Quang Vinh firmly believes that there will be breakthroughs made in economic co-operation, especially in areas such as digital transformation based on science and technology and innovation, green transformation, and climate change adaptation.
Vietnam and the US agreed to upgrade ties to that to a comprehensive strategic partnership for the causes of peace, co-operation, and sustainable development during the recent two-day state visit to Vietnam made by US President Joe Biden. This has captured special attention from plenty of experts.
Many people believe that both nations’ decision marked an important milestone in terms of the relationship between the two countries, thereby creating an open corridor for bilateral linkages across a multitude of fields moving forward.
Former Ambassador Vinh said that this agreement is of great significance for both countries and for the future of bilateral relations in the near future.
It serves as the basis in which to guide future Vietnam-US relations for decades to come, the diplomat said, adding that the two sides will devise action programmes to guide the relationship for the cause of stronger development. This will focus on areas which are currently experiencing development momentum, especially further deepening understanding, respect, political trust, and mutually-beneficial co-operation.
According to information given by the former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the world is changing dramatically in terms of economic development models. The nation and the US are also moving towards higher and more sustainable development by the 2030 to 2045 period.
The former Vietnamese Ambassador to the US firmly believes that there will be a breakthrough made in economic ties, especially in areas such as digital transformation based on science and technology and innovation, green transformation, and climate change adaptation. These are areas that require collaboration and interaction between the country and the US, thereby further facilitating the promotion of relations between the two countries, especially in trade which has flourished over recent years.
The former Ambassador emphasized that the two countries upgrading relations to a new level of relations also reflects the momentum of ties, as well as Vietnam's independent, self-reliant, and diversified foreign policy of being friends with other countries. This serves to balance the nation’s general foreign relations which has seen strong development over recent times.
Mutual relations have grown steadily across multiple areas ranging from politics, diplomacy, to economics, trade, investment, national security and defence, from multilateral co-operation to bilateral ties, along with collaboration in science, education, technology, and overcoming the consequences of war, all of which have all enjoyed strong developments.
“This relationship designation continues to objectively reflect the importance of the relationship, which has both its comprehensive and strategic nature.
I also believe that, with visits like this by the US government in the future, enhancing understanding and trust building trust, especially political trust between the two sides will increasingly increase, thereby creating a solid foundation for the two countries' relationship to develop stronger in the coming time," former Ambassador Vinh expressed.
Regarding the future prospects of the two countries' relations over the coming time, the former Ambassador to the US said that in any relationship, whether strategic or comprehensive, there is a difference of interest among nations.
“In Vietnam's relations with other countries as well as in the nation’s relations with the US, the story is still different. But there are principles and mechanisms to handle this difference in accordance with the interests of both countries, while we still reach a consensus, multiply common interests and still control differences. That is the upcoming relationship between the two countries,” he said.
"Another point is that we must maximize the opportunities in economic, trade and investment cooperation when the world is shifting very strongly to green development, green economy, and digital technology. This is a very important content in which the United States has strengths and Vietnam is an attractive market that can be taken advantage of,” the diplomat added.
