UNHRC adopts Vietnam – initiated resolution on human rights, climate change

VOV.VN - The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted 30 resolutions, including one on climate change and human rights jointly drafted by Vietnam, Bangladesh and the Philippines.

The joint resolution highlights the negative effects of climate change on people’s livelihoods and human rights, and calls for international cooperation to overcome these effects.

It emphasizes the need to address gaps in the protection of human rights, especially the rights of women and girls, in the context of climate change.

It also affirms women’s role in decision- and policy-making on climate change, and calls for the implementation of funding agreements reached at COP27 to assist developing countries to prevent, reduce and address the loss and damage caused by climate change.

The UNHRC held its 53rd regular session in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 19 to July 14. The Vietnamese delegation led by Nguyen Minh Vu, assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, actively engaged in and gave opinions at meetings and consultations.

A debate on climate change and human rights co-hosted by Vietnam, Bangladesh and the Philippines, attracted the participation of a large number of representatives of countries and international organizations such as the UN Population Fund and non-governmental organizations in Geneva.

Together with other ASEAN countries, the Vietnamese delegation also delivered some speeches on topics of ASEAN’s concerns, such as technical cooperation, capacity building, climate change and human rights, social welfare, and women’s empowerment and leadership.
