VIDEO: First match of Alfred Riedl’s reign as national team coach

VOV.VN - A friendly match held between Vietnam and French club Guingamp FC in 1998 was Alfred Riedl’s first match in his role as head coach of the national team.

Let’s go back through time to get a glimpse into Riedl’s work in Vietnam:

Riedl managed the Vietnamese football team on three separate occasions, including from 1998 to 2000, 2003 to 2004, and 2005 to 2007.

He is widely considered to be the country’s most successful foreign coach in the pre-2008 period, with his greatest achievement being leading Vietnam to the finals of regional tournaments such as the AFF Cup, formerly the Tiger Cup, and the SEA Games.

Most notably, he led the nation, including a squad featuring legendary striker Le Cong Vinh, to the quarterfinals of Asian Cup in 2007. He also joined Vietnamese coach Mai Duc Chung in taking Vietnam’s U23 team to the third qualifying round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
