Vietnam gives priority to semiconductor industry development

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called on foreign businesses, including Japanese firms, to develop the semiconductor industry in Vietnam which is given priority in its development policy.

Meeting with representatives of leading Japanese companies in Tokyo on December 16 morning, Chinh briefed them on three Vietnamese breakthroughs, namely institutions, human resources, and infrastructure, affirming that Vietnam considers promoting innovation, science and technology as a strategic choice and top priority.

He noted that the development of the semiconductor industry requires a synchronous and modern infrastructure system, alongside developing digital infrastructure. Vietnam boasts an abundant workforce in the field of information technology, which needs to be trained and retrained to support the semiconductor industry in future.

According to the PM, the recent lifting of Vietnam – Japan relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership is an important foundation for Japanese businesses to invest and do business in Vietnam, quoting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida saying Vietnam-Japan relations have no limits.

He therefore requested that large Japanese businesses specialising in semiconductor manufacturing increase cooperation and develop the semiconductor industry ecosystem in all three stages of design, chip manufacturing, and packaging and testing in Vietnam.

He particularly asked them to focus on promoting technology transfer; help to formulate mechanisms and policies; invest in infrastructure, building training facilities, research and development centers, semiconductor chip product design and development centers and semiconductor engineer training programs in Vietnam; and improve management capacity.

Vietnam will continue to introduce appropriate priority policies for businesses and investors in this field regarding taxes and land rent, he told the executives.

It can be said that Vietnam is a safe haven during the height of the storm, he said, adding that so far this year, the country has attracted about US$30 billion of registered FDI capital and disbursed about US$20 billion of the total amount.

He recalled late Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda’s ‘from heart to heart’ message nearly half a century ago, and said this is also Vietnam’s perspective when building and developing an advanced culture imbued with national identity, as well as in relations with international friends and partners.

At the meeting, leading Japanese firms such as SBI Holdings, Renesas Electronics, Denso, Rapidus, and Tokyo Electron Limited presented directions and proposals for cooperation in developing semiconductor chips and ecosystems in Vietnam.

They highly appreciated Vietnam’s potential as well as the cooperation potential of Vietnamese partners in the semiconductor industry, artificial intelligence technology and other high-tech industries.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is in Tokyo for a working visit to attend a commemorative summit marking 50 years of the friendship and cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.
