Exciting Giong festival draws the crowds

VOV.VN - Giong festival officially opened at the Soc Temple historical relic site in Soc Son district, Hanoi, on the morning of February 21, attracting large numbers of local people and visitors.

Giong festival is an annually held event commemorating Saint Giong, a local hero who sacrificed his life to defeat an invading force.

According to the customary tradition, 8 communes of 26 villages in Soc Son district send offerings to the festival.

Betel and areca are the main oblations given at the festival.

After the ritual ceremony, the betel and areca are shared out among local people.

This year local people are able to get godsends and enjoy the colourful performances at the opening ceremony of the festival.

Doan Van Sinh, head of the Soc Son district’s Culture and Information Section, says the organizing board offered godsends to local people at three specific locations in order to avoid the disorder of previous years.

Hundreds of local people line up to receive some of the offerings of areca and betel leaves.
