VTV vies for SEA Games broadcast rights
Television copyright for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar is not free, and broadcasters across the region will have to bid for the right to televise the event.
The Vietnam Olympic Committee (VOC) has invited Vietnam Television (VTV) to enter negotiations for the event’s Vietnamese coverage.
According to VOC deputy chairman Hoang Vinh Giang, VTV will then share its copyright with other domestic networks.
“We were recently informed that the hosts Myanmar will sell TV copyright in their own way. Outside of the Southeast Asian (SEA) region, world stations such as ESPN will show live broadcasts of the events at the 27th Games,” said Giang.
“The VOC’s position is that all of the action should be transmitted to fans, especially events which will feature Vietnamese athletes. We chose VTV to buy this year’s rights but they will not be the exclusive broadcaster in Vietnam.”
Phan Ngoc Tien, deputy head of VTV’s sports, entertainment and economic news department, confirmed that they have received a letter of invitation from Myanmar to meet and talk about the issue.
The Games are scheduled to be held in Naypidaw, the new capital of Myanmar, as well as in two other main cities, Yangon and Mandalay, this December, with athletes from the region competing in 33 different sports.
