Bangladesh, Vietnam target US$1 billion in bilateral trade

(VOV) - President Truong Tan Sang and his Bangladeshi counterpart Abdul Hamid have agreed to bring bilateral trade turnover to US$1 billion next year.

An official welcoming ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace on August 10 for President Abdul Hamid who is visiting Vietnam for the first time as Bangladesh’s President. 

President Truong Tan Sang said the visit is of great importance for strengthening bilateral ties, adding that Vietnam has always paid a great deal of attention to developing ties with Bangladesh.

At talks following the reception, President Sang and President Hamid expressed their delight at both countries’ growing traditional relations and all-round cooperation. They agreed on more exchanges of high-level visits, delegations, and people between Vietnam and Bangladesh in the time ahead.

Both sides also shared economic development experience, notably in agriculture and personnel training, and discussed regional and global issues of shared concern.


The two sides consented to further expand cooperation in such sectors as garments and textiles , mining, energy, chemicals, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, consumer goods, food processing, iron and steel production, construction and telecommunications.

The two leaders underlined the need to maintain good cooperative relations and offer each other support at regional and international forums, especially the UN,the Non-Aligned Movement, South-South cooperation, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF),the Asia- Europe Meeting (ASEM), and regional and sub-regional cooperation. Vietnam acknowledged the proposal in favor of Bangladesh becoming  a dialogue partner of ASEAN and encouraged Bangladesh to spur specific and efficient cooperation with the regional grouping.

They also noted with satisfaction the positive results achieved in economic and trade cooperation. Last year's two-way trade grew 40% from a year earlier, reaching more than US$ 800 million .Sang and his host were unanimous in elevating two-way trade turnover to US$1 billion in 2016.

In regard to regional and international issues of shared concern, President Sang expressed concern about recent developments in the East Sea and reaffirmed Vietnam's stance on maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the region, resolving disputes peacefully on the basis of respect for international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), not using or threatening to use force while fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) towards formulating a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The two State leaders expressed their conviction that this visit will contribute to fortifying traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations.

Bangladeshi President Md. Abdul Hamid is on a state visit to Vietnam from August 9-13 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Truong Tan Sang.

The same day, President Abdul Hamid met with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and attend a great banquet hosted by President Truong Tan Sang and his wife.
