Vietnam, Laos foster links in expatriate-related work

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith affirmed that support provided by the State Commission for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) for the Liaison Committee for Overseas Laotians, over the last five years, has helped deepen the Vietnam-Laos relationship.

During his March 22 reception for Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister and COVA Chairman Vu Hong Nam, who is on a working visit to Laos from March 22-23, the Lao official said he hopes for closer links between the two agencies in implementing the two States’ policy for their overseas nationals.

The Vietnamese guest briefed the host of outcomes of the working session between the two committees, saying that the two sides effectively cooperated in the period.

In the future, they will continue to boost connections, especially in exchanges of experience and information, and in training personnel, he stressed.

Previously, Deputy Foreign Minister Nam held talks with his Lao counterpart Khamphau Onthavan, during which they looked back at the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two committees on cooperation and experience exchange between in 2011-2015, and discussed future cooperation orientations.

The officials agreed on the extension of the MoU in the next five years, focusing on sharing information on the world situation or events relating to their countries’ overseas residents, and supporting each other in communication work.

The two sides will jointly prevent and struggle against hostile elements which might sabotage either nation.

They agreed to create favourable conditions for each other in rolling out plans on the exchange of information, experience, experts and working delegations.

The Vietnamese side committed to providing an annual training course for staff from the Liaison Committee for Overseas Laotians, in either Laos or Vietnam.
