The world has made progress in achieving poverty elimination worldwide, but it requires the utmost effort to reap set targets by 2030, as heard at the event.

In his opening speech to the event, UN Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said countries have 12 years left to realise the sustainable development agenda.

Three years have passed by since 193 member states adopted the agenda, many people have enjoyed a better life compared to a decade ago.

The rate of poor households was brought down to 9 percent in 2017 from 27 percent in 2000. However, drought and natural disasters caused by climate change, and escalating conflict in several areas are hampering poverty elimination effort.

The 10-day event attracts over 1,000 leaders of governments, companies and civil organisations who will discuss the process of realising SDGs.

Representatives from 47 countries will share experience, including success stories, challenges and lessons in the process.

President of the UN Economic and Social Council Marie Chatardova expressed hope that a joint statement at the end of the forum will convey a strong political message about international community’s efforts to realise the sustainable development agenda by 2030.
