Tra fish exports to major markets skyrocket in January

VOV.VN - Tra fish (pangasius) exports to the United States, China, the EU, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) markets recorded robust growth in January, according to details given by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

In January, Vietnamese pangasius exports doubled to nearly US$165 million against the same period from last year.

The major pangasius export product was frozen fillets with turnover of more than US$131 million, representing a rise of 87% on-year and accounting for 80% of total export proportion.

China and Hong Kong (China) continued to be the largest importers for Vietnamese pangasius with turnover seeing a four-fold rise to US$52 million compared to last January.

Most notably, frozen pangasius exports to China increased by 6.5 times on year, a figure which was even higher than the export turnover of frozen fillets, the key export product to this market in January 2023.

Meanwhile, the US purchased pangasius products worth US$18 million from Vietnam, up 83% against the same period last year.

Elsewhere, EU member countries imported pangasius worth nearly VND13 million from the Vietnamese market, up 20% on-year. Of the figure, the Netherlands became the leading consumer of Vietnamese pangasius at nearly US$4 million, up 16% on-year.

According to industry insiders, there are bright prospects for pangasius exports in the US and Chinese markets this year due to reduced inventories and growing consumption demand.

Le Hang, communications director of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), emphasized that there are positive signs ahead for pangasius exports this year due to rising export orders recorded in January and February.

Moreover, the price of raw pangasius soared from VND26,000 per kilo last year to VND29,000 per kilo in early 2024.

Therefore, pangasius exports are forecast to increase slightly to US$2 billion this year, up more than 10% compared to the figure of US$1.8 billion seen last year, she added.

Truong Dinh Hoe, general secretary of the VASEP, underlined the importance of diversifying export markets and consumer products with competitive prices, renovating production procedures, as well as focusing on deep processing to boost pangasius exports this year.
