Ambassador highlights ASEM’s importance to Vietnam’s multilateral diplomacy

VOV.VN - Ambassador Nguyen Nguyet Nga, vice chairwoman of the National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation and Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has outlined the breakthroughs made in the international relations of both Asia and Europe over the past 15 years.

During recent talks held with the media to mark the occasion of ASEM’s 25th founding anniversary, Ambassador Nga praised ASEM’s significance to the nation, along with the country’s contributions to this multilateral forum as a founding member. Indeed, the establishment of ASEM marked a turning point that changed the nature of relations and equality between Asia and Europe.

ASEM has been a platform which as helped both continents bolster their voice and co-ordination, effectively deal with issues in international ties, and substantially contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding, co-operation, and equality to achieve common targets and greater development.

This forum was initially founded not only to share and strengthen mutual ties, but to take concrete actions, Ambassador Nga noted.

She went on to state that through ASEM, the nation has been able to fully utilise support in order to promote negotiations on its entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO), along with its continued integration into the global economy. In addition, she affirmed the significant important role of ASEM and its members amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continuing to be complicated in both continents.

Aside from the current co-operation priority of continuing to respond to COVID-19, ASEM should also consider longer-term issues, particularly the post-pandemic comprehensive socio-economic recovery, she added.

ASEM represents an important forum for the nation in terms of strategy, economy, politics, security, development, and society, Ambassador Nga said. Indeed, the ASEM High-level Policy Dialogue on "ASEM at 25: Strengthening Asia-Europe Partnership in a Transforming World" which took place on June 22 showed that the theme chosen by Vietnam for the event attracted the attention of other members.

The Ambassador said that dialogue also demonstrated the clear-sightedness of foreign policy detailed within the resolution of the 13th National Party Congress.

The numerous achievements over the past 25 years indicate that ASEM continues to play a crucial role in the implementation of the country’s multilateral diplomacy.
