UN Secretary General hails Vietnam’s contributions to UN development agenda
VOV.VN - Vietnam has provided strong support for and made practical contributions to the United Nations’ priority cooperation areas, including peacekeeping, climate change response, sustainable development, water resources security and food security, among others.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was speaking at a meeting with Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong on the sidelines of the third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, China, on October 18.
Vietnam has set an exemplary role model for many developing countries globally, said Guterres, affirming the country is an important partner of the United Nations. He expressed his hope that the Southeast Asian nation would make greater contributions to global governance.
Thuong for his part highly appreciated the role and contribution of the Secretary General and the United Nations to international peace, stability, and security, and said Vietnam is always ready to support and actively contribute to international common efforts.
Vietnam always considers the United Nations the leading organization for peace, cooperation, and development in the world and a trusted, loyal, and long-term friend of Vietnam in every stage of national development, he told the UN leader.
According to the president, Vietnam is working closely with United Nations agencies to implement United Nations cooperation programmes on sustainable development goals, climate change response, digital transformation, and green transformation, social justice, and peacekeeping. He asked the world’s governing body to continue supporting Vietnam in implementing international commitments, including Our Common Agenda (OCA) as well as in meeting national development goals.
Secretary General Guterres echoed Vietnam’s views on promoting multilateralism and international law, while improving the effectiveness of international institutions.
He expected that Vietnam would successfully achieve its peace and prosperity goals and continue to demonstrate its responsible role to the world and the United Nations. The Secretary General affirmed that the United Nations would fully support Vietnam in implementing its commitments on sustainable development and climate change response.
Exchanging views on major regional and global issues of common concern, the two leaders agreed on the need to uphold the rule of law and promote the role of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms between the United Nations and regional organizations, including ASEAN.
