Vietnam greatly values UNESCO's multilateral cooperation and role

VOV.VN - Vietnam always places importance on multilateral co-operation and the role of UNESCO and is therefore ready to share its experience and successful lessons with member countries.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son made this affirmation at a reception given to President of the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO Simona-Mirela Miculescu on April 25.

Welcoming the official visit to Vietnam by Miculescu, the first by a president of the UNESCO General Conference since 2000, the FM emphasised that the nation will continue to proactively contribute to UNESCO's efforts, with preparation for the UN Summit of the Future slated for September in New York.

The Vietnamese diplomat expressed his joy that the co-operative relationship between the country and UNESCO is increasingly developing in a comprehensive, substantive, and effective manner. He emphasized that UNESCO's support has been making an important contribution to promoting the process of sustainable socio-economic development, as well as the cultural values, image, land, and people of Vietnam.

Minister Son asked the UNESCO official to go ahead with continued support for the nation through specific activities such as accelerating the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Vietnam-UNESCO co-operation for the 2021 to 2025 period, providing policy consultation, and sharing experience in serving socio-economic development.

This is in addition to supporting ties in developing high-quality human resources; application and development of science, technology, and innovation; digital transformation; climate change adaptation, marine scientific research; and promoting cultural values, heritage, and the strength of Vietnamese people.

In response, Miculescu shared FM Son's assessment of the strong traditional friendship relationship that has existed for over nearly 75 years, based on mutual understanding and trust, with mutual support for common development between the two nations.

She went on to express her impression and congratulated the nation on its various achievements in innovation, integration, dynamic, and creative development while still preserving cultural values and heritage.

Miculescu highlighted the country as a strategic, reliable, and responsible partner of UNESCO, as well as being one of the leading countries in effectively implementing its various programmes and activities.

The nation has always received the trust and confidence of international friends, with evidence for this being the fact that there are few countries like Vietnam which engage in five key operational mechanisms.

Miculescu also agreed with the FM's proposals on the direction of future collaboration efforts, while affirming that UNESCO is always a companion and reliable partner of Vietnam and stands ready to support the nation to promote its titles and heritage. She also praised the country for launching a broad array of important events this year.

The same day saw the UNESCO official hold a working session with Dinh Tien Dung, secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Tran Sy Thanh, chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and  chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Ha Kim Ngoc.

Moving forward, Miculescu is also scheduled to have a working session with leaders of Ninh Binh province, as well as attend the 10th Anniversary of the Trang An Landscape Complex which was recognised as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site back in 2014.
