Central Vietnam bracing for heavy downpours, massive flooding
VOV.VN - The central region of Vietnam has experienced torrential rainfall of up to 800mm over the past few days that triggered water levers in major rivers from Nghe An to Thua Thien-Hue provinces to swell up quickly, leading to the risk of inundation, flash floods, and landslides.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) attributed the heavy rainfall primarily to the influence of the ongoing cold spell, the strongest this winter.
Torrential rain hit Nghe An on November 13, flooding many streets which put the lives of local people into chaos.
Meanwhile, the provinces of Ha Tinh, Da Nang, and Thua Thien-Hue endured rainfall of between 100mm and 500mm, even reaching as high as 800 mm in some places.
Several places in the localities were flooded, with some areas left 200 to 300mm underwater.
Most notably, a herd of more than 50 cows raised by a family in Quang Tri province were swept away into the river, while 800 houses were submerged under water.
Experts warned about the potentially high risk of flash flooding and landslides occurring in the mountainous areas of central provinces as heavy rain is forecast to fall till November 17.
Local authorities scrambled to evacuate people living in areas at high risks of flash floods and landslides to safe places for safety reasons. They also strictly managed boats along the coast, lagoons, and rivers in the event of rising floodwaters.
