HCM City, Cuba step up healthcare cooperation

How to send Cuban doctors to work in Ho Chi Minh City was a topic at a workshop held by the city’s Investment & Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) on May 16.

At the workshop
Speaking at the event, Cuban Deputy Minister of Health Marcia Cobas Riuz said that after 60 years of building a modern healthcare system, Cuba now has 90,000 doctors and 30,000 medical workers.

Besides developing healthcare tourism, Cuba has sent thousands of doctors to work in 63 countries and territories worldwide, she said, adding that Cuba wants to have a Cuban doctors programme with Vietnam, who has good friendship with the American country for years, in the time ahead.

Welcoming Marcia Cobas Riuz’s initiative, Vice Director of the municipal Department of Health Nguyen Huu Hung said that HCM City will be a pioneer to receive Cuban doctors to work at local private healthcare facilities.

As the city only has 18 doctors per 10,000 residents, receiving Cuban doctors will help the city improve its healthcare services for local people.

Attending the workshop, healthcare leaders of Ninh Thuan, Ben Tre and Dong Nai provinces said they want to receive Cuban doctors as they are in need of high-quality human resources in the field.

ITPC Director Pham Thiet Hoa highlighted that Cuba has a well-developed healthcare system with excellent doctors and modern equipment. The country is able to produce good vaccines and medicines to treat cancer and diabetes.

The centre will work to bring Cuban doctors to Vietnam in the coming time, he affirmed.
