Boat race kicks off New Year on Ly Son island

VOV.VN - To mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year Festival, the Year of the Pig, a boat racing festival was held on Ly Son island located in the central province of Quang Ngai on February 8.

The festival was held over five days and is one of the largest events held on Ly Son island. It is held annually on the fourth day of the new lunar year.
The race saw eight teams from An Vinh and An Hai communes participate.
Thousands of local people and tourists descended on the festival.
The event features the cultural identities of different communes and prays for safety and prosperity of local fishermen over the year ahead. It often proves a great opportunity for local boat racers to show off their skills.
The festival also commemorates combatants who have laid down their lives in defence of the sovereignty of Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) islands.
