Senior, U23s teams to hold first training session with Philippe Troussier

VOV.VN - The national senior and U23 teams are set to take part in their first training camp in March under the guidance of new head coach Philippe Troussier as they prepare for international tournaments in the year ahead.

The training camps will give Troussier time to assess the two teams, giving both squads the chance to familiarise themselves with the new football philosophy ahead of important events such as the 2023 Asian Cup and the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32).

The coach will divide the time into four phases to focus on Vietnam’s U23s as they make preparations for the SEA Games 32 which are set to be held in Cambodia this May. The players will train from March 1 to May 29, and a shortlist of 24 players will be announced afterwards.

The young footballers are scheduled to take part in a training camp in the United Arab Emirates and play several friendly matches there.

Furthermore, Vietnamese players will also take part in the U20 Asian Cup finals in Uzbekistan in March. Coach Troussier may then choose to change around some players in the senior squad if the young footballers put in a strong performance at the regional tournament.

The Vietnam Football Federation and coach Troussier have reached an agreement for a contract, with the Frenchman taking on the role of head coach of the Vietnam national men’s football team from March to July 31, 2026.

This year Vietnam aim to defend their gold medal in the men’s football event at SEA Games 32 in Cambodia this May, and compete in the 2023 Asian Cup.

Coach Troussier has set the ambitious goal of taking Vietnam to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 when the global biggest men’s football tournament plans to increase the number of participating teams to 48 from the current figure of 32.
