Vietnamese fighter eliminates Taekwondo world defending champion in Azerbaijan

VOV.VN - Truong Kim Tuyen clinched a historic victory over defending world champion Daniela Paola Souza in the quarter-final round of the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships on May 31.

In the women’s 49kg category, the Vinh Long native beat her strong Mexican rival with a final score of 2-0.

The same day also saw Tuyen defeat other two rivals Nadia Omar of Somalia and Tien Yu Jhuan of Chinese Taipei.

The 26th World Taekwondo Championships is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from May 29 to June 4. As many as 921 athletes from 144 countries and territories are competing for 14 sets of medals across 14 weight categories.

Vietnam has sent five martial artists to the tournament. Two of them, Tran Thi Anh Tuyet and Tran Thi Anh Ngan, were eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16.

Their participation in the world championship will help them to accumulate points ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Hopeful Kim Tuyen, 26, has won many titles during her career. She bagged a silver medal in the finweight category at the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships, after being defeated by Sim Jae-young in the final.

She also brought home a bronze medal at the 2016 Asian Taekwondo Championships, and a gold medal at both the 2018 Asian Taekwondo Championships and the 2021 Asian Taekwondo Championships.

Most recently, Tuyen took a silver medal at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32) held in Cambodia in May.
