Vietnamese gymnastics squad ends ASIAD 19 journey with one silver medal

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese gymnastics squad concluded their journey at the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19) held in Hangzhou, China, with one silver medal, thereby completing their target at the regional event.

The national team ended the competition at ASIAD 19 with a performance by gymnast Le Thanh Tung in the horizontal bar event on the evening of September 29.

He was awarded a total of 13.166 points to rank seventh, whilst Zhang Boheng of the hosts China received a gold medal after earning 15.1 points.

This comes after Nguyen Van Khanh Phong secured a silver medal in the gymnastics event for Vietnam on the fifth day of the Asian Games' competition on September 27.

Phong took part in his favourite event, the men's rings, which he previously won gold in at the SEA Games in May in Cambodia after he beat world champion Carlos Yulo of the Philippines last May in Cambodia.

So far, the Vietnamese delegation has won one gold, two silvers, and 12 bronzes.

The country’s first gold at ASIAD 2023 was won by shooter Pham Quang Huy in the men's individual 10m air pistol event.

ASIAD 19 commenced on September 23, with the regional competition being scheduled to last through to October 8 in the host city of Hangzhou in China. The 504-strong Vietnamese sporting delegation is made up of 337 athletes and compete in 31 out of the 40 sports available.

Moving forward, Vietnam aims to pocket up to five gold medals during the course of ASIAD 19, close to the achievement recorded back at the ASIAD 18 in Indonesia in 2018, which is the most successful Asian Games of a Vietnamese sporting delegation to date.

During that version of the tournament the Vietnamese delegation won a total of five gold medals in the women's rowing, athletics, women’s long jump, men's pencak silat, and women’s 400m hurdles.
