Becoming a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2008-09 term will create opportunities for Vietnam to further contribute to the UN’s efforts to maintain and promote peace and security in the world, said spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Dung in Hanoi on October 30.

He was answering a question about Vietnam’s response to the decision made by a group of Asian countries at the UN to nominate Vietnam as the only regional candidate for non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term.

“We welcome the decision by the group of Asian countries at the UN to nominate Vietnam as the only regional candidate for non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term,” Mr Dung said. “The decision showed their recognition and high evaluation of Vietnam’s contributions to the UN’s activities.”

Since becoming a member of the UN in 1977, Vietnam has always fulfilled its strong commitments to the UN chapter and its role and responsibility as a member of the UN.
