Google’s Sundar Pichai reaches out to Vietnam

(VOV) - Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai is making his first official visit to Vietnam since assuming the helm last August, as part of a concerted effort to drum up customer growth in the emerging market.

During his visit, Mr Pichai, who grew up in India, is scheduled to meet with software developers to make a pitch to woo Vietnamese online users and convince them to plug into the company’s Gmail and YouTube services.

On December 22, Mr Pichai met in Hanoi with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to discuss the Mountain View California company’s long-term game plan for the Southeast Asian nation’s market.

To get more consumers connected to the Internet, they discussed a variety of joint efforts to provide free internet services to the nation’s residents such as high-altitude balloons to provide Internet access in rural areas.

Mr Pichai grew up in India in the southern city of Chennai and studied at the renowned Indian Institute of Technology. He has risen quickly through Google’s ranks since joining the company in 2004.
