Russian military officers visit Vietnam Peacekeeping Department

A military delegation of Russia led by Lieut. Gen. Kuralenko Sergey Vasilievich, Deputy Commander-in-chief for Peacekeeping Operations of the Russian Ground Forces, visited the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (VPD) in Hanoi on June 15.

VPD Director Colonel Hoang Kim Phung welcomed the Russian delegation’s trip and its experience shared with the department.

Phung spoke highly of Russia’s position, role and contributions to the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the seventh biggest contributor of finance, Russia has great influence and voice in the UNSC as well as in establishing and implementing peacekeeping missions, he said.

In addition, Russia is one of the biggest providers of goods and services for the United Nations peacekeeping operations, Phung stressed.

Phung hoped that the Russian Ministry of Defence will continue assisting and sharing its information, experience and professional skills in peacekeeping operations with the VPD via joint training courses and seminars, especially in training Vietnamese officers who directly participate in UN peacekeeping missions.

Kuralenko said the ongoing visit aimed to enhance the efficiency of coordination in peacekeeping operations between Russian and Vietnam.

He promised to make greater efforts to further promote relations between the defence ministries of Russia and Vietnam, and create favourable conditions for developing peacekeeping operations of the two nations and in the world.

Following the working session, the Russian delegation had an exchange with lecturers and learners of an international training course at the VPD.
