Vietnam reiterates support for major pillars of IAEA

VOV.VN - The nation has reaffirmed its unwavering policy of backing all three major pillars of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including ensuring nuclear safety and security, as well as the inspection and application of nuclear energy for peaceful means.

Nguyen Trung Kien, governor and permanent representative of Vietnam to the IAEA, made the statement while attending the year’s final regular meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors from November 14 to November 18 in Vienna, Austria. The event featured the participation of representatives from 35 member states and international organisations as observers participating.

Affirming support for the IAEA’s key role, the Vietnamese representative also shared concerns regarding complicated developments of security at present, going on to highlight the principles of conducting dialogues and settling disputes by peaceful means in line with the UN Charter and international law.

Together with members of the board, they also discussed the IAEA’s action plan 2023, including seeking solutions relating to budget issues.

Participants also assessed  a report of the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee (TACC) regarding the results of technical co-operation activities this year. In addition, they discussed the IAEA's proposal to increase the operation budget ahead in 2023, as well as the implementation of an agreement on inspection between IAEA and several countries like Syria, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Iran.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the IAEA, called on all countries to join the Atom4Netzero initiative that was announced by the IAEA during the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of Parties recently held in Egypt.

Each year, the IAEA Board of Governors convenes meetings in March, June, September, and November, with Vietnam being elected as a member of the board in September, 2021, for the 2021 to 2023 tenure.
