Vietnam underscores the central role of comprehensive political solution for Syria

VOV.VN -Vietnamese Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy outlined the central role of a comprehensive and lasting political settlement that can bring stability to Syria while attending a virtual UN Security Council (UNSC) session on May 26 regarding the current political and humanitarian situation in Syria.

The event featured the participation of Geir Pedersen, special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, and Mark Lowcock, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

Both speakers noted the particularly dire situation currently facing the Syrian people amid continued political deadlock, whilst negotiations between the government and the opposition at the Constitutional Committee, which is being mediated by the UN, have yet to make any significant progress.

Furthermore, security uncertainties remain in some areas and often pose a threat of escalating, thereby seriously impacting the lives of local civilians, the speakers claimed, adding that the humanitarian crisis has been severely aggravated by the economic downturn and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They also reiterated an appeal by the UN Secretary-General for the extension of the mechanism for cross-border aid delivery into the Middle Eastern country to ensure humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people, especially the millions who have been forced to leave their homes in northwestern regions.

UNSC member states also underlined the importance of promoting a concrete political solution, especially with regard to stepping up the negotiation process at the Constitutional Committee in line with basis of UNSC Resolution 2254 in order to thoroughly deal with the crisis in Syria.

In his remarks at the function, Ambassador Quy, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, said building trust among all parties, enhancing diplomatic efforts, and maintaining security stability are key in supporting the political process.

He went on to share concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria, including food and water insecurity, a shortage of basic goods, and the serious impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local diplomat also called for bolstering co-operation in delivering humanitarian aid throughout Syria whilst enhancing international support for humanitarian activities, with a specific focus on the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
