Two top Canadian lawmakers praised Vietnam’s achievements during the Doi Moi (Renewal) process and its efforts to minimize the impact of the global economic crisis while receiving Chairman of the National Assembly Committee for Social Affairs Truong Thi Mai on April 2.

Speaker of House of Common Peter Milliken and Speaker of the Senate Noel Kinsella also valued the Vietnamese NA Committee’ efforts to promote female legislators’ capacity in recent times.
The two sides stressed the need to increase cooperation between Vietnam and Canada, their legislative bodies and agencies.

At another working session with Minister of International Cooperation Beverly Oda the same day, Ms Mai thanked the Canadian government for its support and assistance to Vietnam through the Canada International Development Agency (CIDA).

The first two phases of CIDA-funded Policy Implementation Assistance Project (PIAP) has contributed to increasing law-making capacity and supervision activities of the Vietnamese legislative body, Ms Mai said.
Minister Oda expressed her hope that the third phase of the project would continue to pay off, helping the Vietnamese legislative body increase its capacity.

Vietnam remains in a list of 20 countries and territories receiving CIDA assistance and this shows the Canadian government’s acknowledgement to Vietnam’s achievements, she said.
