AFC honours two Vietnamese footballers ahead of Women’s World Cup campaign

VOV.VN - Local footballers Tuyet Dung and Huynh Nhu have been honoured on the website of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in the build up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which begins in late July.

The pair are set to star in Vietnam's debut Women’s World Cup campaign, the AFC wrote on its website.

Coach Mai Duc Chung will be counting on the presence of the two long-serving stalwarts of Vietnamese women’s football, with midfielder Tuyet Dung and record goal scorer Huynh Nhu leading the team in their Group E challenge, the article noted.

The AFC also mentioned 21 other players selected by the 72-year-old Duc Chung, who has kept faith with the majority of the squad that recently won gold at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

“We are now 99% prepared right from the European training trip,” said Duc Chung, “Now we only reinforce and improve, there are some mistakes that we’ll try to keep correcting.”

“When it comes to the tournament, everyone knows we are in the difficult group, but we have to try our best,” the coach noted.

With the games being played during the winter season in New Zealand, Duc Chung is wary of the impact it may have on his squad, particularly as Vietnam is now in a hot and humid period.

The Vietnamese national women’s football team and head coach Mai Duc Chung departed from Hanoi to New Zealand on July 5 to start their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

The team will then have two weeks of training before competing in the biggest sporting event on the planet. They will also play in two friendly matches in order to test their lineup, with fixtures scheduled against New Zealand on July 10 followed by Spain on July 14.

At the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Vietnam have been named in Group E and will face defending champions United States on July 22, Portugal on July 27, and 2019 runners-up Netherlands on August 1.
