Vietnam oil tanker vanishes, 18 missing

(VOV) - A Vietnamese oil tanker with 18 crewmembers on board went missing while sailing to central Vietnam from Singapore, according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration.

The Sunrise-689, owned by Hai Phong Fisheries Shipbuilding Joint Stock Co., disappeared less than an hour after leaving Singapore port at 4.27 am on October 3.

The exact coordinates were 2.75587 north latitude and 105.306235 east longitude, around 120 nautical miles from Singapore and 360 nautical miles from Ca Mau.

The vessel was carrying 5,226 metric tonnes of oil products.

Vietnamese search and rescue authorities, specifically the Maritimes and the Maritime Security Information Centre (MSIC) and the High Command of the Vietnam Coast Guard (HCVCG), are actively searching for the tanker.

Other relevant agencies have been informed, and other nearby vessels have been instructed to be on the lookout.

Although it isn’t clear yet what led to the disappearance, piracy has not been ruled out.
