Thousands make pilgrimage to Buddhist land in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Thousands of pilgrims and visitors flocked to Yen Tu Mountain, dubbed the Buddhist land in Vietnam, in northern Quang Ninh province, on February 19 to take part in the opening of the annual spring festival for Buddhist pilgrims.

Yen Tu is one of the most important spiritual tourism destinations nationwide. The annual spring festival therefore draws millions of pilgrims and visitors.

Yen Tu has been considered one of the country's Buddhist hubs since Tran Nhan Tong (1258-1308), the third king of the Tran Dynasty, founded "Thien Truc Lam Yen Tu", Vietnam's hallmark Buddhist meditation sect. The king and his two successors built hundreds of pagodas and shrines throughout the Yen Tu Mt. complex, including famous structures which boast thousands of prized statues and artefacts.

The festival opens with traditional rituals such as drum beating, bell ringing, and other spiritual practices.

Participants come together to pray for peace during the opening ceremony of the festival.

The area has received around 138,000 arrivals since February 10, the first day of the first lunar month, up 19% year-on-year.

The Yen Tu spring festival is scheduled to take place until the end of the third lunar month, or early May.

Yen Tu, a special national relic site recognized in September 2012, has been declared one of the 10 most attractive spiritual destinations in Vietnam by the Vietnam Records Organisation.
