The Government Steering Committee in charge of land border demarcation and marker planting held a meeting in Hanoi on May 15 to discuss ways to speed up the land demarcation and marker planting on the Vietnamese-Chinese border towards the end of 2008.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan, also brought together officials of concerned ministries, branches and localities and representatives of working groups in charge of the task.

Participants agreed that the land border demarcation and marker planting work has made important progress over the years, contributing markedly to building a peaceful, cooperative and friendly Vietnamese-Chinese borderline.

To accomplish the task by 2008 as envisioned by the two countries' senior leaders, concerned ministries, branches and localities and working groups must make greater efforts, the participants noted.

The work must ensure that territorial sovereignty be safeguarded while co-operation with the Chinese side is further enhanced, thus hastening the speed of the work, the participants stressed.

They spoke of the results of the meeting between the two heads of the Government-level delegations to the talks on the Vietnamese-Chinese border and territory during which a host of measures to accelerate the land border demarcation and marker planting were agreed upon.

They discussed the implementation of the measures agreed upon at the above-mentioned talks.

Closing the meeting, Deputy PM Khoan, who is also head of the Government Steering Committee in charge of land border demarcation, ordered relevant ministries, branches and localities to quickly deploy measures adopted at the meeting in order to fulfil the set target of completing the demarcation by 2008.
