WB supports poverty reduction in Central Highlands

(VOV) - The World Bank (WB) has agreed to provide preferential credit of US$150 million to six central highlands and Quang Ngai provinces for a poverty reduction and economic development project.

Speaking at a launch ceremony in Quang Ngai City on August 29, Tran Ngoc Hung, Project Management Board Director, said the project aims to improve the livelihood for the poor community in 130 villages in 26 districts in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai province.

It is aimed at helping local people, especially ethnic minority people, escape from poverty and encourage them engage in local socio-economic development to have a better life.

More than 540,000 local people are expected to benefit from the project scheduled for implementation during the 2014 to 2019 period.

In the initial period, the project is to be carried out in the three districts of Son Tay, Son Ha and Ba To in Quang Ngai at a cost of more than US$16 million, including US$15.2 million from WB loans and nearly US$880,000 from from State budget corresponding capital.

It is comprised of four components: infrastructure development (US$5.956 million), sustainable livelihood development (US$3.338 million), capacity enhancement and communications (US$5.1 million) and project management (US$811,067).
