Vietnam’s laws on childcare and protection are relatively complete in line with international norms, said Jesper Morch, Chief Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam.

“Making these laws is a very painstaking and systematic process through many stages. This reflects Vietnam’s care and attention to its future generations,” said Mr Morch at a press conference in Hanoi on June 1.

The UNICEF senior official, who is also the UN co-odinator in Vietnam, told reporters that the protection of children in Vietnam is not just based on its legal documents, but it depends on how these documents are carried out by local authorities and concerned agencies.

He revealed that UNICEF Vietnam, in collaboration with concerned UN agencies in Vietnam and Vietnamese organisations, will focus mainly on building and enhancing the capacity for concerned Vietnamese agencies at local levels to implement the above-mentioned laws in the near future.

He said in the Month of Action for Children (May 14-June 30), UNICEF Vietnam plans to carry out many activities, relating to child protection under the theme “Protect children: today’s safety, tomorrow’s sustainability”.

The UN agency will celebrate several days relating to child protection, such as International Children’s Day (June 1), World Day Against Child Labour (June 12), International Day Against Drug Abuse (June 26), and Vietnam Day of the Family (June 28).
