Another two provinces, Lai Chau and Thua Thien-Hue, have been added to the list of provinces suffering from the foot-and-mouth disease, said the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The disease broke out in three communes and the capital city of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on February 20, 2007, hitting 45 cattle. It also occurred in two communes of northern Lai Chau province on January 8.
The epidemic has existed for less than 21 days so far in the 11 provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Khanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Dak Lak, Thua Thien Hue and Lai Chau.
Meanwhile, no bird flu hot spot has been detected in localities nationwide since February 25, 2007. The recent hot spot was found in Tra On district, southern Vinh Long province.
25 million doses of avian flu vaccine will be imported next week for the first vaccination campaign this year.
