In its August 4 issue, the Congress Daily said the Senate Committee on Finance’s vote on 31 July with 18 votes in favour of granting permanent normal trade relations status (PNTR) for Vietnam is good news for George W. Bush’s administration.

The paper added although the Vietnam PNTR Bill has received support from most congressmen the path to congressional approval of PNTR for the country in September after the Summer recess is still strewn with obstacles.

Senate leaders will have to deal with supplementary articles proposed by Republican senators relating to garments and textile and religion and there will be more difficulties to overcome at the Senate, the paper said.

There will be likely a complementary article attached to the Vietnam PNTR Bill under which the US administration will periodically report on the religious freedom situation in Vietnam before Congress.
