At least 16 people have been killed in a crash involving a Slovak military transport plane which came down in Hungary with more than 40 aboard.

There was only one confirmed survivor hours after the Soviet-designed Antonov 24 crashed near the village of Telkibanya on the Slovak border on January 19. The plane was apparently carrying Slovak peacekeepers from Pristina in Kosovo to Kosice in Slovakia.

According to the Hungarian Disaster Management Agency, the plane caught fire and emergency crews battled to put out the blaze. However, rescue operations have been hampered by hilly, forested terrain with helicopters reportedly unable to reach the crash site.

Slovakia has some 100 troops stationed in Kosovo as part of the Nato-led peacekeeping force.
