The President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Myung-bak, arrived in Tokyo on June 28 for talks with Japanese PM Taro Aso, focusing on closer cooperation between the two countries in addressing the Korean nuke issue and building their partnership.

The two leaders are expected to stress the importance of promoting bilateral cooperation as well as with the US in implementing UN resolutions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea after this country conducted the second nuclear test in May. They will discuss Seoul’s proposal for five-party talks without Pyongyang to make a breakthrough in the negotiation process.

They will discuss measures to improve bilateral economic relations, including the possibility of resuming negotiations of an economic partnership agreement. Earlier, Tokyo refused to accept Seoul’s request to further open up its market for farm products from the RoK. They will work on a schedule of negotiations of a bilateral civil nuclear agreement.

The two leaders will also exchange views on issues such as the global economic recession and assistance to Afghanistan and Pakistan in support of their fight against militants.

This was the third bilateral talks between Mr Lee and Mr Aso as part of the so-called “high-level shuttle diplomacy” since former Japanese PM Yasuo Kukuda attended Mr Lee’s swearing-in ceremony in Seoul on February 25.
